From the South Island’s largest city we’ll go coastal as we head into Kaikoura and take the peninsula walk. Fans of seafood are in luck for this evening – this place is known for its crazy-good crayfish.

You’ll definitely need your camera for today’s free day. Nelson is stunning. One option is to take to the walking tracks, or you could paddle along the shoreline in ocean kayaks. Wine Time! Today we head for our secret Marlborough Winery for a tasting sesh. Then, jump on the ferry to cross the Cook Strait and leave the blue waters of the Marlborough Sound for Wellington. It’s like entering a different world. We’ll hop off in the ‘fourth coolest city’ in the world. It’s New Zealand’s capital and has a whole heap of cool shops and galleries to check out by day. As night falls, get a taster of the craft beer scene and take your pick of award-winning restaurants.

Visit Te Papa, the NZ National Museum. It’s six floors of awesomeness. Take a look around town before we board the bus for the vast volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park. It’s World Heritage listed don’t you know?! This evening, relax. There’s a sauna and spa. Or head straight for the terrace bar for a drink by the fire. We’ll have a hearty country-style meal – just leave room for dessert – it’s a Kiwi favourite, pavlova.

Two active volcanoes, old lava flows, an active vent, emerald lakes and amazing views. The optional Tongariro Crossing is one of the best full day hikes you can do in NZ. It’s a free day, so you’ve got the time. There are some shorter walks too. However you spend the day, know that you’ve got another relaxing night in the lodge to look forward to.

Taupo is first, and hanging above the free flowing Waikato River, the Taupo Bungy is a must for those game enough to take the plunge! Then it’s on to the raging waters of Huka Falls and we’ll take a little detour to see (and hear) the gurgling Mud Pool. Afterwards, we’ll head for Maori heartland that is Rotorua, known for its thermal springs and...interesting aroma (blame the sulphur in the air). Tonight enjoy a warm welcome at a traditional Maori Marae. After a hearty, family-style dinner, learn about Maori history and watch an exclusive cultural performance by the Te Arawa people. You’ll be a Haka expert by the end of the night.

Hobbit fans could go for The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour. You’ll venture through Middle Earth, get lost among the Hobbit holes and see the scenery from the film in what you could call super HD! Tonight, settle in to Rotorua’s largest hotel, set right on the shores of the beautiful Lake Rotorua.

It’s time to leave Rotorua behind and head for the ‘maiden with a thousand lovers’ (aka Auckland). It got its name because the area was coveted by so many tribes – and you’ll soon find out why. After a visit to the Waitomo Caves, it might be time to say goodbye to your trip buddies, but there’s plenty more NZ out there to explore.

On our way to Rotorua we’ll swing by the Waitomo Caves. Take on the optionals and go exploring this otherworldly attraction. Why not try Black Water Rafting, explore the Ruakuri Cave or go see the glowworms. They’re all awesome, trust us. Maori legends and mythology have been passed down for thousands of years. You have one night in a meeting house to soak in as much as you can! After learning some Haka moves and checking out the ladies’ Poi dance, it’s time to tuck into a traditional Kiwi dinner.

One of the best parts of travelling is experiencing the nightlife and entertainment each city has to offer. However, amidst the fun and excitement, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and personal safety as well. Before you hit the road with us, it’s important to be aware of the following:

When you’re on a night out, remember to avoid walking alone, particularly through deserted areas like beaches and back streets. Always stick together, take a taxi where possible, and keep a note of your accommodation details so you can find your way back to your fellow Topdeckers if you become separated.

In some countries, alcoholic measures can be considerably larger than what you may be used to. Try to keep track of what you’re drinking, and if you see one of your trip mates looking a little worse for wear, take them back to your accommodation. Be cautious when accepting drinks from strangers and never leave your drink unattended.

It’s also important to be aware that what you might consider harmless flirting may be interpreted differently in some countries. Be yourself and have fun, but don’t be naïve, and be mindful of the signals you are sending out so that you don’t find yourself in an uncomfortable situation.
