The Bay of Islands is big on numbers: 144 islands, 90 miles of beach in one stretch, and 100-metre high Te Paki sand dunes ready for some serious sand boarding action. NZ is so gorgeous it has waterfalls like Whangarei hidden just off the highway. We'll make a pit stop to walk to the waterfalls on our way back to Auckland. First up, a visit to Waitomo Caves, then it’s on to our Marae stay. Maori legends and mythology have been passed down for thousands of years. Tonight, you have one night in a sacred Maori meeting house, so pay attention. After learning the tongue-thrusting Haka dance moves of the All Blacks and the finesse of the ladies’ Poi dance, you’ll polish off a traditional maori dinner and end the night feeling like a local. You lucky thing, you.

Mud, Middle Earth and massages are the order of the day in the bubbling, sulphur-soaked town of Rotorua. Geothermal activity gets turned up to 11 with bubbling mud pools, and if that's not enough, you can bungy jump off a ledge as we pass by the largest lake in New Zealand. It's also time to meet the dessert that's caused a battle between NZ and Australia since someone whipped an egg white: the pavlova.

With dual cultural and natural heritage status, and often described as the most epic hike in NZ, Tongariro NP is home to two active volcanoes that will hopefully keep a lid on things. The optional Tongariro Alpine Crossing will quickly top your list of favourites if you don't mind heights and the odd dormant lava chamber (and walks from 20 mins to 8 hours). Hike, raft or mountain bike then hit the spa and warm your feet by the fire in an alpine lodge overlooking Mt Doom.

From hiking over lava to readjusting to city life, today we hit the nation's capital, Wellington (no, it's not Auckland!). NZ is so gorgeous it has waterfalls like Whangarei hidden just off the highway. We'll make a pit stop to walk to the falls on our way back to Auckland. We wrap things up here but where will you go next?

James Cook named our first stop the Bay of Islands. Well, you know what to expect! Seeing over 140 islands might take a while, so hop on the optional ‘Rock the Boat’ island tour to take in as much as you can.

Tear yourself away from the beautiful Bay of Islands. We’ll make two pit stops: first at the pretty Whangarei Falls, then at Mt Eden for a view of the city from the top of a volcano. Pretty cool, huh?

On our way to Rotorua we’ll swing by the Waitomo Caves. Take on the optionals and go exploring this otherworldly attraction. Why not try Black Water Rafting, explore the Ruakuri Cave or go see the glowworms. They’re all awesome, trust us. Maori legends and mythology have been passed down for thousands of years. You have one night in a meeting house to soak in as much as you can! After learning some Haka moves and checking out the ladies’ Poi dance, it’s time to tuck into a traditional Kiwi dinner.

Crank the heat up to the max – today we’re off to check out the geothermal activity in Rotorua on an included tour. Enjoy a traditional Hangi lunch – a meal cooked in an underground oven pit. Then, after taking a look at some the Kiwi birds, we’ll make tracks to the epic Huka Falls (you’ll hear the rumble of the falls before you see them). Finally, we’ll swing by beautiful Lake Taupo before settling in at our accommodation near Tongariro National Park.

Known as one of the best one-day hikes in the world, you’ll get the chance to complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing today (optional and weather dependent). With three volcanic peaks dominating the horizon and terrain that’ll make you feel like you’re on Mars, this hike is so worth the sore legs the next day. Look at you adventuring like a pro!

Next up: Wellington. Get your bearings on an orientation tour, then go exploring. Our top tips? The incredible Te Papa Museum and the pretty botanical gardens. Don’t miss the nightlife here either. With more bars and restaurants per capita than New York, what better way to spend the night?

Today we’ll cross the Cook Strait by ferry and sail into the blue waters of Marlborough Sound. Hop off in Picton and you’ll find out why this region has become so famous for its wine (and scenery).

Explore the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park by boat, take to the walking tracks, paddle along the shoreline in ocean kayaks, or see it all from above with a skydive. This is a real South Island gem, so get amongst it.

One of the best parts of travelling is experiencing the nightlife and entertainment each city has to offer. However, amidst the fun and excitement, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and personal safety as well. Before you hit the road with us, it’s important to be aware of the following:

When you’re on a night out, remember to avoid walking alone, particularly through deserted areas like beaches and back streets. Always stick together, take a taxi where possible, and keep a note of your accommodation details so you can find your way back to your fellow Topdeckers if you become separated.

In some countries, alcoholic measures can be considerably larger than what you may be used to. Try to keep track of what you’re drinking, and if you see one of your trip mates looking a little worse for wear, take them back to your accommodation. Be cautious when accepting drinks from strangers and never leave your drink unattended.

It’s also important to be aware that what you might consider harmless flirting may be interpreted differently in some countries. Be yourself and have fun, but don’t be naïve, and be mindful of the signals you are sending out so that you don’t find yourself in an uncomfortable situation.
